National Bird of Brazil: SabiÓ - Laranjeiro

The Sabià (or Thrush) includes 12 species of slightly differing color. The best known is the Rufous-bellied Thrush (Sabià-laranjeira) is the official Brazil National Bird. Its scientific name is “Turdus ruficentris” and is celebrated in music, novels, poems and stories.

Like many birds in Brazil, the Sabià migrates north to the tropical zone during the winter and then returns to the temperate zone of Southern Brazil when the weather begins to warm.

The Sabià generally lives alone or in pairs in treed habitat in both urban and rural areas. It feeds upon coconuts, oranges, papayas, and insects. The typical lifespan of the Sabià is 25 to 30 years.
